BJFG PLANNING DAY
Almost thirty members of the community gathered on a freezing August day to share their vision for the Brigalow-Jimbour Floodplain Group. Despite the challenges facing Landcare in general and our group in particular - such as no full-time coordinator and restricted funding opportunities –.the need for Landcare in the region is as present as ever. One of the aims of the session was to develop a vision for the future of BJFG. Community members were invited to provide their thoughts on the following questions: What did the community want from the group? What was their vision for Landcare in the region? The attendees explored these issues by answering the question - what are the core roles of the Brigalow Jimbour Floodplains Group? Each person gave their own thoughts on this matter by sharing a number of points which they considered the core roles of the group. Overall, just over 40 points were raised by the group. These were then paired with similar ideas, and grouped into clusters dealing with the same over-arching issue. The minutes of the meeting contain each individual idea, the cluster the idea was grouped with, and the over-arching theme of each cluster.
These themes give a picture of what BJFG does and should do, how it is done, and why, or to achieve what outcome. Some of the cluster themes also provide an idea of what BJFG is all about. Some cover more than one of these points, but overall:
The core roles of BJFG are to: · educate land managers in best practices through information sharing between landholders, BJFG, technical staff and scientists · secure funding, and · promote the good work being done in the region by Landcare, landholders and the agricultural industry by: · involving and encouraging young people to participate in the group and events · playing an advocacy and lobbying role with our partners, to be a voice for this region · knowing what problems and issues are important by actively engaging the community · including all land managers in natural resource management · being a framework for landholders to connect with to access support for Landcare efforts, and · getting back to fundamentals to: · promote and sustain viability/sustainability/productivity to engender inter-generational equity in the region
The Management Committee would value your feedback on this vision, as well as your ideas on the support requirements both from and for BJFG, and what issues are your priorities.
